Remember that time where we had a decent number of weeks between Network Specials? That was a glorious time, wasn’t it? No sooner than The Greatest Royal Rumble was over we are now into Backlash. Backlash is only the second best wrestling event taking place this weekend (PROGRESS’ Super Strong Style is first), but it should be better than The Greatest Royal Rumble. That was awkward propaganda. The card looks decent, with a few good matches on it, so it could be a good watch. Here are our WWE Backlash 2018 predictions.
WWE Championship Match
AJ Styles (c) vs. Shinsuke Nakamura
So AJ vs Nakamura disappointed at Wrestlemania (but it lead to a Nakamura heel turn), and the Greatest Royal Rumble match ended in a double count out. I feel that because this match is the defacto main event, this should be the match that delivers to the standard these two can.
With Nakamura’s new heel dynamic he has a brand new style and found a new lease of life. I can therefore see a nice run with a heel Nakamura as champion. I feel this match could be the best of the three.
Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
Seth Rollins (c) vs. The Miz
Seth Rollins has been almost the de-facto top babyface on Raw. Did you see his ovation in Montreal on Monday? This match was one of the better matches at Wrestlemania, and Rollins has been on a tear recently. The Miz is of course The Miz, but I feel with Rollins they have something so I can see his IC Title reign continuing, at least for now.
Prediction: Seth Rollins
WWE RAW Women’s Championship
Nia Jax (c) vs. Alexa Bliss
Another unexpected highlight of Wrestlemania was Jax vs Bliss. It was slightly too long, but Jax throwing Bliss around was extremely watchable. Since then – Alexa has debuted “The Moment of Bliss”, a segment where she is utterly brilliant.
For this match, I cannot see them taking the title off Nia Jax just yet. There’s enough heels on Jax’s side to fight, so I can see them continuing with her as champion for a bit.
Prediction: Nia Jax
WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship
Carmella (c) vs. Charlotte Flair
Carmella is absolutely brilliant.
She cashed in her Money in the Bank on Flair after Wrestlemania, and since then has been the cocky arrogant champion that we needed. Flair had one of the better matches at Wrestlemania, but I can see her dropping out of the title picture. Flair have something going on with the IIconics, so I can see Flair being tied up with them. Carmella to retain. It won’t be pretty, mind.
Prediction: Carmella
WWE United States Championship
Jeff Hardy (c) vs. Randy Orton
Here is an interesting match, as Hardy has faced Orton in a grand slam of championships: They’ve wrestled for the WWE Championship, the tag team championship and now a mid card title.
Do I sense a Randy Orton heel turn? He’s been a face for a while now – since before Wrestlemania 31. It’s a long time, and beside a bit of a tease with Orton and Wyatt, he’s been a good guy throughout? This has been quickly built up – Hardy is already on his second challenger. I cannot see what bonus it has sticking it on Orton right now, but WWE may surprise me.
Prediction: Jeff Hardy
Roman Reigns vs. Samoa Joe
So, in surprising events, Roman Reigns is not the Universal Champion. He has lost, twice, to Brock Lesnar, who is still the Universal Champion. So – as of right now – Roman Reigns appears a bit weak. As such, I can see him getting his win back on a departing to Smackdown Samoa Joe. This could easily be one of the stronger matches on the card.
Prediction: Roman Reigns
Daniel Bryan vs. Big Cass
So Daniel Bryan is back with a bang. What a performance at the Greatest Royal Rumble. Him breaking the longevity record of over 1 hour 15 minutes and his chest ending up like chop suey was quite a sight for the majority of the match. At Backlash he faces the chap who eliminated him – Big Cass.
Cass has come back, and I feel that they are possibly doing a Diesel/Shawn Michaels dynamic with him and The Miz. Obviously this is building to Bryan vs. The Miz at a big show like Summerslam. So Bryan to win this.
Prediction: Daniel Bryan
Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn vs. Bobby Lashley & Braun Strowman
Also receiving a heroes welcome was Owens & Zayn in Montreal. Raw’s newest superstars are now facing the winner of the Greatest Royal Rumble Braun Strowman, and Bobby Lashley – who was the post-Wrestlemania return.
I would assume that Lashley & Strowman will win this. Strowman I’m beginning to think is the one to take the title off of Lesnar, so who knows? I fancy them to beat Owens & Zayn. Though I can see Zayn & Owens feuding with Woken Wyatts after this.
Prediction: Bobby Lashley & Braun Strowman
