It’s the biggest party of the summer! Summerslam is here and it’s one of the big four Pay Per Views of the year. This means one thing: it’s going to be a long one. The card looks amazing, with two stand out matches in particular that could steal the show if given enough time. However, as one of the biggest betting markets of the year, who will win? In this post, we talk through our WWE Summerslam 2018 Predictions.
WWE Universal Championship
Brock Lesnar (c) vs. Roman Reigns
There’s a lot of talk (again) about this being Brock Lesnar’s last match in the WWE for a while. I’m still not convinced. Build up has been average but with a rather excellent Paul Heyman promo when Brock turned on his advocate, they’re doing everything – everything – to make Brock look like a dick, but I’m really still not convinced he’ll be booed next to Roman Reigns.
So, against better judgement, I’m going for Brock to win this. I still think they’ll book themselves out of this corner they’ve found themselves in with Braun Strowman cashing in (more on that later), but it would be a final swerve to the career of Roman Reigns.
Prediction: Brock Lesnar wins
WWE World Championship
AJ Styles (c) vs. Samoa Joe
On paper, this is the match of the night.
An average build up has taken place for this match, with a daft segment towards the end with Joe going after Styles’ family and questioning his credentials as being a family man. But on paper these two should smash it out of the park. This – given time – could be an absolute classic, but it needs time.
I’m tempted to go for a Joe win here. I think from the heel roster AJ has pretty much beaten them all, and beyond The Miz taking it off Styles giving Bryan & Miz the title programme, I’m convinced Joe will win the big one here.
Prediction: Samoa Joe wins
Raw Women’s Championship
Alexa Bliss (c) vs. Ronda Rousey
So, how many matches is Rousey in? 3? 4? And she has another women’s title match.
I’m not complaining, she’s been kept special and her matches have been greater than anybody expected, so this is the first chance to anoint her as the chosen one in the division, against the previous chosen one.
Bliss has been superb as champion, and yet, I still think she keeps it here. I think Rousey will win, but I expect shenanigans in this match. I feel they will probably do something like Rousey’s crowning at the Evolution Pay-Per-View that’s coming up in a few months, as Rousey becoming champion here could be lost in the shuffle a bit.
Prediction: Ronda Rousey
Money In The Bank Briefcase Match
Braun Strowman (c) vs. Kevin Owens
This match is for Braun’s Money in the Bank briefcase. An interesting stipulation but there we go.
Owens has been classic Owens in the build up to this feud, playing the cowardly heel, but so over the top that it’s worked. I cannot see him winning this match here, although Owens ‘won’ the last match, I feel Braun’s going to get revenge here, and move onto other things. Dare I say – the new Universal Champion?
Prediction: Braun Strowman Wins
WWE Intercontinental Championship
Dolph Ziggler (c) vs. Seth Rollins
So the turn for Ambrose didn’t happen…yet?
It’s been widely predicted that long term babyface Dean Ambrose would turn at some point, and it seemed logical to do so when he returned. However he came back with a new look (seriously, he’s huge now!) and part of me could see a turn here, and Ambrose vs Rollins in a programme.
I’ve gone for a lot of changes in titles, so I’m going for Ziggler to retain here.
Prediction: Dolph Ziggler wins
WWE Smackdown Women’s Championship
Carmella (c) vs. Charlotte vs. Becky Lynch
Everything they’ve been doing has been pointing to a Becky Lynch victory, with a possible heel turn.
I’m tempted to go for a Lynch victory, but I’m not going to say heel turn just yet. In fact I don’t think she will turn heel at all. Charlotte is better as a heel, and I can see an autumn programme between Charlotte and Becky until the end of the year with eventually Charlotte getting the win, going into Wrestlemania’s dream main event of Rousey vs Charlotte (they’re so doing that).
Prediction: Becky Lynch wins
Daniel Bryan vs. The Miz
And at this point, I realise there’s a lot of matches on the show.
This is the match people have been clamouring for whilst Bryan was off. The Miz cut classic promo after classic promo in preparation for this match, which for a long time didn’t appear would happen. But it is. Right now, Bryan’s contract situation is well and truly up in the air, so I’m not sure if they’ll build Bryan. Expect a long, decent match, but expect a Miz victory.
Prediction: The Miz wins
WWE United States Championship
Shinsuke Nakamura (c) vs. Jeff Hardy
Again, another interesting pairing, and hopefully they give it time rather than the short match they had at the last pay per view that was built to get Orton back into the mix. Yes sadistic Randy Orton is back, (or at least a part of him is, stories emerged about his backstage conduct, so he’s currently keeping a low profile).
I see Nakamura winning. He needs more rehabilitation than Hardy and Nakamura with a long US title reign could be just what he needs. Plus I’ve a lot of wins so this retaining seems like a no brainer.
Prediction: Shinsuke Nakamura wins
Finn Balór vs. Constable Corbin
So after the match last month this feud continues, with Finn Balór being too “small” for Corbin. I’m not really interested in this feud, so hopefully they move onto better things, as both deserve better (I quite like the “Constable” Corbin character I will say). So I’m going for a Balór win to send people home happy.
Prediction: Finn Balór
WWE Smackdown Tag Team Championships
The Bludgeon Brothers (c) vs. The New Day
This match seems more thrown together than most. I’m not most thrilled at this match as it’s quite underwhelming. I’m going for The Bludgeon Brothers to retain.
Prediction: The Bludgeon Brothers Win
